Artist Statement

My art practice is primarily a painting practice, however, it also incorporates elements of photography and film. My most recent body of work comprises an installation of figurative paintings that have evolved from a photographic source. I construct my own photographs by the means of staged lighting, models, and props of familiar consumer product. The resulting images are then manipulated and altered using digital software before painting. Using oil paint and acrylic markers on aluminium panel, I then blend both traditional and more contemporary mediums to resolve the image. The work is centered within the theory of semiotics and attempts to negotiate the complexities and limitations of the codified images that we process and understand on a daily basis. Through perspectives gained via experience and the influence of other powerful media such as advertising, film, literature and more recently the Internet. It seeks to examine such themes as consumerism, the female gaze and contemporary anxieties within the construct of reality.
